OUR STORY

SCO-LS

The story of Sisters of Charity began in Montreal when a thirty-six-year-old widow Marguerite d’Youville, made a vow to devote herself to the most bereft. Their charitable works quickly expanded beyond Montreal. They were solicited by different ecclesiastical authorities in the country. The Sisters extended their roots beyond Montreal, and even beyond the province of Quebec. The letter patent authorizing its foundation arrived in 1753. In February 20, 1845 Sister Elizabeth Bruyere and her companions arrived in Ontario to establish the first bilingual school for girls.
